Clubs represented at the tournament were Brick Landing, Brierwood, Carolina Shores, Fox Squirrel, Oak Island, Olde Fort, Sandpiper Bay and Sea Trail. Runners-up in the championship flight were Joan Llewellyn of Sea Trail and Mary Muffley of Sandpiper Bay with rounds of 84. Hilda Hall took low net of 68, Nancy Bouldin took second low net of 70 and Ginger Sugrue had 30 putts. All were from Brierwood. FIRST FLIGHT — Low gross, Joanna Lang, Brierwood, 81; second low gross, Rose Reither, Brierwood, 82. Low net, Florence Green, Oak Island, 61; Loretta Shirk, Fox Squirrel, second low net, 63. Seniors golf tourney July 21 The next golf tournament for senior citizens is scheduled Tuesday, July 21, at Olde Fort Golf Course on N. C. 133 between Southport and Leland. Prizes will be awarded for the first three places in each age group. The cost is $15 a person. Registration deadline is Wednesday, July 15. More information on the tournament, which is offered through the Bruns wick County Parks and Recreation Department, can be obtained by calling Kay Brannon at 278-9209. Council plans July 26 event The Brunswick County Literacy Council will sponsor a golf tournament July 26 at Carolina Shores Golf and Country Club, which is donating the use of the course and the golf carts. Tee times are available from 10:52 a.m. to 1 p.m. The format will be cap tain’s choice. The $25-per-person entry fee will include green fees, cart, refreshments and prizes. All proceeds will be used by the Brunswick County Literacy Council to help adults improve reading skills. The first annual Windsurfing Regatta was held on the afternoon of July 4. Winners in the A-fleet included Steve Leonard of Raleigh, first; Mark McCormick of Wrightsville Beach, second; and Tom Cluchey of Wilmington, third. Post 68 finishes one game back Wilmington Post 10 takes title By George Cox Sports Editor LELAND -- With Brunswick Post 68 holding a half-game lead over Wilmington Post 10 going into Thursday night’s first meeting of the season between the American Legion Area II Eastern League lead ers, Post 68 skipper Ed Lewis was upbeat. "If we can take them tonight and Warsaw tomorrow night, then first place is ours no matter what hap pens Saturday night," Lewis com mented. The long ball by Post 10’s Stephen Wolff took away Lewis’ dream on a night that two excellent right handed pitchers - Post 10’s Joey Pyrtle and Post 68’s Chris McBride - faced off. Wolffs two-run blast in the first inning propelled Post 10 to a lead it never relinquished as coach Dave Brewster’s Port City crew went on to win 5-2 and take a half-game lead Local shooters on target, win in state games Five members of the Am Hill Pistol Club participated in the North Carolina State Games. The pistol competition was held at the Sir Walter Raleigh Gun Club in Crccdmoor, and consisted of four stages of fire using international practical shooting confederation rules and rankings. Joe Justice received a gold medal in C class and Richard Timberlake received a sliver medal in revolver. Ray Jackson placed fourth in A class, Chris Elrod placed fifth in B class and Ralph Godwin placed fifth in C class. Ant Hill range is located on High way 211 across from Greenwood Kennels. Members shoot an IPSC match the third Sunday of each month and plan a three-gun (rifle, pistol, shotgun) match the last Sun day in August. They also sponsor a NR A Junior Rifle class twice a month and are available for free in dividual firearms training. Hitting his round-tripper off Post 68’s best pitcher, McBride, a former North Brunswick baseball star and freshman player on last spring’s University of North Carolina at Wil mington team, Wolff’s towering homer was one of the longest in memory over the right-centerfield .barrier in Scorpion Stadium. McBride went on to fan 17 Post 10 batters while yielding just four hits, but Pyrtle not only pitched well, giving up five hits, but also helped his own cause at the plate in the ninth inning with a solo homer. Boxing competition is held The second annual Amateur Boxing Classic hosted by Joyner’s Boxing Club was held Friday at the Southport city gym. Due to last-minute cancellations and no-shows, Joyner’s Boxing Club showcased only three of its boxers in three different matches. Dainell Hill of Joyner’s Boxing Club defeated Kenneth Jefferson of Wampee Boxing Club of Longs, S. C„ in a 2-1 decision in the 106-pound weight class, age 12. Martin Ray of Joyner’s took a 3-0 decision over Wampee boxer Anthony Bellamy in the 125-pound division. Terry Ray lost to U. S. Marine Corps entry Jesus F. Garcia from Camp Lejeune in the 178-pound division. Joyner’s Boxing Club is directed by Larry Joyner. Joyner was assisted by Sherridale Morgan, president of N. C. USA Boxing from Wilmington Boxing Club, in the organization of the event. Post 10 left Scorpion Field with a 14-1 record compared to Brunswick County’s 14-2 mark. Post 6S beat Warsaw Friday night 3-0, while Post 10 whipped Brunswick Shores Post 445, 16-1, and Winter Park on Sun day, 20-0. Post 10 catcher Fletcher Bates scored on a wild pitch to give Wil mington a 3-0 advantage in the third inning.
